Twitter forms coalition with outside groups/experts to fight abuse and harassment

Popular microblogging service Twitter has revealed in a Tuesday blog post that it is forming a coalition outside groups and experts to fight abuse, bullying and harassment on its site.

The coalition being formed by Twitter with more than 40 groups -- including safety advocates, community groups, researchers, and academics -- is called ‘Twitter Trust & Safety Council.’ The key objective of the groups forming the coalition would be to maintain open dialogue on Twitter while preventing abuse and bullying.

Some of the groups that would be a part of the ‘‘Twitter Trust & Safety Council’ include Anti-Bullying Pro, Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and Family Online Safety Institute.

The announcement of the formation of the ‘Twitter Trust & Safety Council’ comes at a time when Twitter already has efforts underway to tackle abuse on its social networking platform, and attract more users. The members of the coalition will review the policies and products rolled out by Twitter from time to time.

In reference to Twitter’s move to form the ‘Twitter Trust & Safety Council,’ Patricia Cartes – the chief of global policy outreach at Twitter – said: "With hundreds of millions of Tweets sent per day, the volume of content on Twitter is massive, which makes it extraordinarily complex to strike the right balance between fighting abuse and speaking truth to power."
