Lakers Offseason Could be Big

Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most historic and successful professional sports franchises in American history. The team has won 16 NBA championships, which is more than any other franchise other than the Boston Celtics. They are also the primary team of some of the most historic players ever including Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. While the Lakers have been extremely successful over the course of their existence, the team also has gone through some periods of struggle. The past few seasons for the Lakers have been challenging as they have continued to try to regain pudding following the retirement of Kobe Bryant.

While the Lakers have had some challenging times over the past few years, there is plenty of reason for optimism. This past season saw the Lakers win more games than most people would have expected while being led by some very young players including Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball, and a strong supporting cast. Another strong reason for optimism is that the there is still a strong allure to playing for the Lakers in Los Angeles, which could help them nab some top free agents this upcoming season. There are some recent reports that believe that the Lakers could build a very strong team during the offseason (https://www.forbes.com/sites/gabezaldivar/2018/04/30/looking-at-lakers-d...).

One of the first moves that the Lakers will have to do over the offseason is release Luol Deng. While he has been a good player in the NBA for his entire career, Luol Deng is well past his prime and is currently eating up a pretty significant part of the salary cap. Once he is released, there will be more than enough money for the team to sign two or three big name free agents.

One of the biggest targets for the Lakers this offseason will be forward Kahwi Leonard, who currently plays for the San Antonio Spurs. Leonards has been considered one of the top players in the league for the past few years and most believed that he would ultimately return to San Antonio. However, there have been many reports that Leonard is not happy in San Antonio and could be seeking out another place to play. Los Angeles has a strong nucleus that could attract him to the team. If Leonard joins the Spurs, there is a good chance that other players will want to come as well. Both LeBron James and Paul George have been mentioned in Laker free agency rumors.
