Giants Suffer Tough Loss to Pirates

San Francisco Giants

One Major League Baseball team that has had a very tough time winning games of late is the San Francisco Giants. They have lost a couple games recently to the Phillies in blowout fashion. They suffered another loss on Sunday. This time it was to the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, they were not blown out. The Giants lost the game in a very heartbreaking fashion. They were trailing by two runs and scored one run in the top of the seventh inning and another run in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game at five. The Pirates scored a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the lead. They were eventually able to hold on for a 6-5 victory.

Jeff Samardzija started the game for the Giants and he was absolutely terrible. This is not the first poor performance he has had this year. In fact, his earned run average currently stands at a hideous 6.94. The Giants are paying him a lot of money. Needless to say, they have been very disappointed with his performance so far this season. He pitched six innings and gave up five earned runs. He allowed six hits, two of which were home runs. This is not the same pitcher who was previously very good before he signed a huge free agent contract with the Giants.

The Giants recent skid has dropped their record to 19-21. Nobody who follows baseball closely thought the Giants were going to be a factor in the playoff race this year. However, there were some experts who thought they were capable of finishing the season with a winning record. There is still a possibility that could happen. The Giants will need to start getting much better pitching. Their staff has been battered by opposing lineups in recent days. This will need to stop soon if the Giants are going to avoid another disastrous season like 2017.

On the other hand, the Pirates have surprised many people this season. Their record is a terrific 23-16. They were not expected to be much of a factor in their division. The Cubs and Cardinals were thought to have much more talent. However, the Pirates are proving a lot of their doubters wrong. They have shown that they have a very talented young team. It remains to be seen if they will be able to keep winning.
