Nissan unveils new home-energy storage system --- xStorage

At a Monday event in East London, automaker Nissan unveiled a new home energy-storage system called xStorage. The new system introduced by Nissan essentially underscores a home battery which can be connected to a residential power supply.

Announcing the xStorage home energy-storage device, Nissan said that the home battery has been made out of recycled batteries sources from Nissan Leaf electric cars; with a total of 12 Leaf battery modules powering the system.

Sharing details about the xStorage home battery, Nissan said that the device gets charged either when renewable energy - in the form of solar panels - is available or when cheap energy from the grid is available, mostly at night.

According to Nissan, the energy stored in xStorage system is released to power the house when energy costs are higher. In addition, consumers can also sell the energy stored in the xStorage home battery back to the grid.

About the pricing and availability of the xStorage home battery, Nissan said that the device will be priced at £3,200 (nearly $4,600); and will be available in the UK in September this year. The automaker, as of now, has no plans for distribution of the xStorage system in the US.
