Nintendo to launch Pokkén Tournament on Wii U on March 18

In an announcement made on Friday, Nintendo has revealed the launch date of its forthcoming Pokémon fighting game, Pokkén Tournament. The company has announced that the game will be available on the Wii U console on March 18, 2016.

The announced release date of the Pokkén Tournament fighting game means that Nintendo plans to launch the game within a few days of the scheduled re-release of the original Pokémon games for the Nintendo 3DS on February 27, 2016.

The imminent launch of the Pokkén Tournament fighting game – in which different characters from the Pokémon game series will be pitted against one another – is part of Nintendo’s year-long celebration of the 20th anniversary of its Pokémon brand.

The Pokkén Tournament fighting game will be notably different from traditional Pokémon games as well as arena-like titles – such as Pokémon Stadium – in the Pokémon franchise. Pokkén Tournament will not feature turn-based combats of conventional Pokémon titles; instead it will essentially require gamers to battle it out as Pokémon in the long-established typical fighting game style.

The first batch of the Pokkén Tournament copies will be available with an Amiibo card which will give gamers the ability to unlock the Shadow Mewtwo character.
