Lyft co-founder John Zimmer posts Medium piece titled ‘The Third Transportation Revolution’

Ride-sharing service Lyft’s co-founder and president John Zimmer has recently posted as blog in Medium titled ‘The Third Transportation Revolution.’ In the post, Zimmer has offered a specific timetable for the transformation from driver-driven vehicles to self-driving vehicles.

Zimmer has claimed in the post that most of the Lyft rides will be in autonomous vehicles by the year 2021. In addition, Zimmer has also asserted that private car automobile ownership in major US cities will “all but end” by 2025.

In other words, Zimmer claims that most of the Lyft rides will be driverless within the next five years; and private cars will essentially vanish from the scene in leading US cities in the next ten years.

The projections by Zimmer with regard to self-driving cars chiefly suggest that markets will undergo a drastic change when Internet-connected cars become available for purchase in large numbers.

Zimmer has said in the post that “By 2025, owning a car will go the way of the DVD.” However, till that time, the next 5-10 years will, as per Zimmer, witness a kind of hybrid network, with both driver and driverless cars on the road; thereby indicating that the transition to autonomous driving will not be an overnight change.
