Los Angeles Hosts Telethon to Assist Hurricane Harvey Victims

Telethon

Los Angeles will serve as the main site for an upcoming charitable telethon seeking to raise funds for hurricane disaster relief. A number of entertainers have agreed to appear at the event, scheduled for simultaneous broadcast over Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and CMT on Tuesday, September 12th. The one-hour show will air at 8 p.m. around the United States, occurring live on the Atlantic Coast and several hours later on the Pacific Coast. Sponsors also plan to stream footage of the telethon in real time via Twitter, YouTube and Facebook.

Recipients of the funds raised during the event include Habitat For Humanity, Save The Children, Feeding Texas, Direct Relief, The Mayor's Fund For Hurricane Harvey Relief, and the United Way of Greater Houston. Los Angeles will serve as the epicenter of the charitable telethon. However, sponsors also plan to open satellite locations in Nashville, Tennessee and New York, New York.

A Texas-Sized Disaster

Hurricane Harvey arrived along the Gulf Coast shortly before the end of August, hitting many areas of Texas and Louisiana with high winds and damaging rains. Flooding caused by the storm forced hundreds of thousands of people to move to relief shelters temporarily. The water destroyed tens of thousands of dwellings and motor vehicles, and left many victims without homes or employment.

The storm prompted an outpouring of public generosity. For instance, many ABC television stations participated in a charitable campaign to raise awareness about the disaster. One young couple in Texas, Josh Tillis and Dayna Skolkin, who originally had planned to conduct a wedding reception on September 3rd, postponed the festivities and joined with a local charitable organization to feed storm victims instead. The upcoming telethon will raise funds to assist a number of organizations working to provide food and shelter in response to the crisis.

Telethon Volunteers

Reportedly, Scooter Braun and musical performer Bun B from Houston helped recruit volunteers to participate in the disaster relief telethon. It will feature appearances by many celebrities. The roster of scheduled performers and guests includes Oprah Winfrey, Blake Shelton, Beyoncé, Barbara Streisand, Matthew McConaughey, Dennis Quaid, George Clooney, Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Seacrest, Jamie Foxx, Julia Roberts, George Strait, Kelly Rowland, Michael Strahan, Norah O'Donnell, Matt Lauer, and others. The event will also feature video clips from a concert performed by George Strait in San Antonio previously to benefit hurricane victims.
