LG announces ‘360 VR’ headset pairable with G5 smartphone

In coincidence with the unveiling of its new flagship handset – the LG G5 smartphone – at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016, LG also announced a virtual reality (VR) headset, which can be paired with the company’s new handset.

The VR headset unveiled by LG at the MWC trade show on Sunday is called the ‘LG 360 VR.’ It has a 20 percent sharper display than most of the other VR headsets; and it is also one-third lighter in weight than competing VR headsets.

The LG 360 VR headset differs from other VR headsets, like the Samsung Gear VR and the Google Cardboard, because it does not require users to slot a smartphone into it. Rather, the 360 VR headset has the capability to connect to the ‘pairable’ LG G5 smartphone with the help of a USB-C cable; thereby resulting in the headset’s light weight.

Other than its remarkably light weight, the LG 360 VR headset also has a soft fabric-like material covering the area around the screen. The screen of the headset is a stunningly sharp 1.88-inch IPS display with 960 x 720 resolution and 649 pixels per inch. The headset also comes with a few pre-installed 360-degree videos.

Meanwhile, though LG had not divulged any information about the expected cost and availability of the 360 VR headset, the company has hinted that the device will essentially be sold as an accessory for the G5 handset.
