Instagram releases new tool to allow users to filter the content they want to see

In an official blog post released on Monday, Facebook-owned photo-sharing site Instagram has revealed that it is rolling out a new Comments tool which will have the capability to automatically block comments that include certain abusive words.

Revealing that the new tool will enable users to deal with online harassment in a simple yet effective manner, Instagram said that users will now have a solution for bullies and trolls that flood their accounts with needless and repulsive comments.

Highlighting the fact that the new Comments tool will essentially give Instagram users the ability to filter the content they want to see, Instagram CEO and co-founder Kevin Systrom said in the blog post that the tool basically unfolds a keyword moderation mechanism which filters comments on the basis of users’ preferences.

Systrom further explained that the new tool allows Instagram users to list words which they find inappropriate and abusive, so that their feed hides the comments in which those words have been used.

However, Systrom also added that the rollout of new tools like Comments tools cannot be the sole solution for tackling the “complex” problem of online harassment and warding off bullies and trolls; and said: “… but together, we can work towards keeping Instagram a safe place for self-expression.”
