Facebook to drop support for Blackberry at the end of 2016

In a recent announcement which is sure to disappoint BlackBerry users, social network Facebook has said that it will shut down support for the BlackBerry operating system (BBOS) at the end of this year.

The announcement implies that, in December 2016, Facebook and its Messenger messaging service will stop working on BlackBerry devices running the BBOS.

However, BlackBerry devices powered by the Android OS - like the BlackBerry Priv handset - will continue to be able to run the Facebook and Messenger apps for the Android platform. Moreover, the users of BlackBerry devices will also continue to be able to use Facebook's mobile web version to post as well as view content.

With Facebook's announcement of end of support to BBOS by 2016-end coming nearly a month after its WhatsApp service made a similar announcement, Lou Gazzola - head of BlackBerry App Ecosystem - officially disclosed the change in a blog post published last week.

Gazzola said in the blog post that Facebook has decided to discontinue support of its essential APIs for the BlackBerry and BBOS platforms, and added: "We are extremely disappointed in their decision as we know so many users love these apps. We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands."
