Facebook: ‘Secret Conversations’ feature is now live for all Android and iOS users of Messenger app

In a recent announcement, Facebook has revealed that its one-on-one encrypted messaging feature – ‘Secret Conversations’ – is now available to all the users of the company’s Messenger chat app for the Android and iOS platforms.

The Secret Conversations feature gives all Android and iOS users of the Messenger app the ability to send end-to-end encrypted messages to their friends on the Facebook social networking site. Via the feature, users can send text, emoji, stickers, and photos. However, the feature has a few limitations.

One of the limitations of the Secret Conversations feature is that it works only on one device. The reason for this is lack of infrastructure on the part of Facebook for distributing encryption keys across the users’ smartphones, tablets, and PCs.

Another limitation is that Secret Conversations have to be started explicitly in Messenger. Encrypted messages are not integrated into the users’ primary thread of conversations with a particular contact because encryption is not the default mode.

Yet another limitation of Facebook Messenger’s Secret Conversations feature is that encrypted messaging only works in one-to-one messaging. As such, Secret Conversations feature does not include group conversations.
