Dodgers Finally Lock up NL West

It has been a very odd year for the Los Angeles Dodgers. They had one of the best four month runs that any team has ever had in baseball history. They were on a historic pace that had many people thinking that they would eventually shatter the record of 116 wins set by the 2001 Seattle Mariners. However, the Dodgers began to lose on a regular basis in August. They would up losing 10 games in a row at one point. This was the most consecutive losses that the team had suffered in the past quarter-century. Obviously, this put an end to the Dodger hopes of having the greatest regular season in baseball history.

Fortunately for the Dodgers, they had a big enough lead in their division that having a bad two months did not cost them their chance at going to the postseason. On Friday night, they finally wrapped up the NL West title that many people thought they would clinch weeks ago. Alas, all of the losses the Dodgers suffered in recent weeks put the inevitable clinching party on hold. The clinching celebration was made even sweeter because of the fact the Dodgers were able to celebrate in front of their main rival Giants. The Dodgers won the game 4-2 at Dodger Stadium thanks in large part to a strong start from Rich Hill who only gave up a single run in six innings of work. It was Hill's eleventh win of the year.

Cody Bellinger provided most of the offense in the game when he bashed a home run with two men aboard in the third inning. It was the 39th time that Cody has gone deep in his amazing rookie season. He has now driven in 94 runs. The Dodgers can now focus on getting their pitching rotation lined up for their first playoff series. They can also rest their starters to make sure they are all fresh for the start of the postseason.

Dodger manager Dave Roberts has said that this entire season has been a very wild odyssey. There was a time when it seemed like the Dodgers could not lose a game. Then it seemed like they would never win again. Roberts said they is a great example why baseball is such a great game. It is impossible to predict. You can be on top of the world and then come crashing back down to Earth.
