New Shark Monitoring Systems Could Make California’s Waters Safer for Swimmers

Legislation in 1990 which instigated a ban on the use of fishing nets along the shoreline has resulted in a rise in the number of adult white sharks inhabiting popular beach areas like San Onofre State Beach, where just last spring a mother of three was bitten on the leg while swimming. The restrictions on near-shore gill net fishing vessels have also led to a growth in the population of certain species of fish on which these sharks are known to feed, making shark attacks a rising concerns with local politicians.
